Chapter III Monthly Virtual Lunch and Learn Event:

Spiritual Abuse and Trauma: Ethical Considerations when Working with Vulnerable Populations

Presented by Adam B. Johnson, LPC

About Adam B Johnson, LPC

I’m Adam Johnson, licensed counselor proud to live and work in Birmingham, Alabama.

My journey into counseling began like many other therapists in the field, by doing my own work and managing my own mental health. I have lived with anxiety and fear my whole life. I also suffered from depression as I tried to figure out why it was so challenging to live day to day.

Counseling opened the door to some lasting change. Through my own counseling, I discovered I had a knack for empathy and compassion. I discovered a desire to help others find some relief from their suffering.

I became a counselor to help make a difference the way my counselor did for me.

I have worked in many different jobs and been of service to others in the vast majority of those work experiences, but they all pale in comparison to the work of counseling.

I think all humans have an innate ability to care for one another and we are all connected to one another emotionally, and in my belief, we are all spiritually connected as well. I want my clients to feel empowered to heal themselves first, then be confident and healthy enough to go and offer that healing to others in their world. The beauty of healing through therapy is to me the most meaningful work that I could imagine doing.

In my younger years, I thought I would go into the ministry but then quickly realized I had some very different beliefs than some of my counterparts. This discouraged me for many years but I finally made it back to finding my way to meaningfully help people. I want the people that feel “broken”, to leave their therapy experience with the knowledge that they were never really broken, but needed someone to care for them and teach them how to care for themselves so they don’t have to feel that way ever again.

I’m also a proud LGBTQ+ ally. I have family in this community. I know Alabama is not always the most welcoming place. But, I promise you, my office is. It brings me great pride and joy to help others feel confident in who they are.
